2013 November Minutes

DATE: Sunday, November 17, 2013 at 2:30 at Bass Pro in Independence, Mo.
OPEN: President Cathy Misko, called the meeting to at 2:34 and welcomed all, especially New members and/or first time attendees. Cathy proudly stated we had official royalty with us today and introduced Mo State Honey Queen, Lauren Collins. Cathy stated if anyone had any important events that would benefit by the attendance of either the Mo State Honey Queen/Princess to contact Wanda Johnston who is in charge of setting those up as well as assisting Queen/Princess prospects.

As there was an extensive agenda setup for this meeting, Cathy said we should get right to Business. She asked if there were any corrections to be made to the posted online October Minutes. With no corrections necessary the minutes were accepted as posted. Don’t forget to review the minutes each month on our website @ midwesternbeekeepers.org. With no unfinished business brought up, we moved along into officer introductions and voting on 2014 officers.
NEW BUSINESS: First she recognized 2013 officers who were spinning off of the board or taking another position: Jim Fisher (not present), 3rd Board Member; Phill Levi, Programs Officer, moving to another position; Ron Vivian (not present), Treasurer who has served in this position for 27 consecutive years.
As she announced the 2014 Officer Nominations, she asked them to stand:
Cindy Connell, Secretary: All those in favor of Cindy serving the Office of Secretary raise your hand/those opposed raise your hand. None opposed. Nomination approved.
Laura Fish, 1st Vice President/Programs: All those in favor of Laura serving the Office of Programs, raise your hand/those opposed raise your hand. None opposed. Nomination approved.
Tanya Fisher (not present), 2nd Vice President/Membership: All those in favor of Tanya serving the Office of Membership, raise your hand/those opposed raise your hand. None opposed. Nomination approved.
Joli Winer ,3rd Vice President/Editor/Publicity Committee: All those in favor of Joli serving the Office of Editor/Publicity Committee, raise your hand/those opposed raise your hand. None opposed. Nomination approved.
Wes Johnston, Treasurer: All those in favor of Wes serving the Office of Treasurer, raise your hand/those opposed raise your hand. None opposed. Nomination approved.
Robert Burns, Auditor: All those in favor of Robert serving the Office of Auditor, raise your hand/those opposed raise your hand. None opposed. Nomination approved.
Tom O’Neill (not present), Librarian: All those in favor of Tom serving the Office of Librarian, raise your hand/those opposed raise your hand. None opposed. Nomination approved.
Phill Levi, 1st Board Member: All those in favor of Phill serving the Office of 1st Board Member, raise your hand/those opposed raise your hand. None opposed. Nomination approved.
Terry O’Bryan (not present), 2nd Board Member: All those in favor of Terry serving the Office of 2nd Board Member, raise your hand/those opposed raise your hand. None opposed. Nomination approved.
Ed Fisher, 3rd board Member: All those in favor of Ed serving the Office of 3rd Board Member, raise your hand/those opposed raise your hand. None opposed. Nomination approved.
Serving in appointed positions for 2014 and deserving recognition are:
Tom Britz (not present), Honey Plants Chair.
Dean Sanders, State Liaison Chair.
Cheryl Westra, Webmaster/Social Media.
While these appointed positions did not require a vote, Cathy asked for Members approval of these appointments which passed with none opposed.
Last was President. Cathy asked Phill to take care of the voting for President.

Cathy then asked everyone to please read the Amendments to our Bylaws in this month’s Newsletter as we will be voting on them in December.
Continuing on with business, Cathy asked Lauren Collins, one of our first scholarship students of 2012, to come forward. Lauren had accomplished the goals that were set before her and passed her final beekeeping questionnaire. Therefore, Cathy, who had also been her Mentor, and Phill, awarded Lauren her Certificate of Ownership and membership Award pin for successful completion of the Youth Scholarship Program.
Members were reminded to check the back table for membership renewal forms/ 2014 Beekeeping Calendars $15/ Name tag order $8/ Bee Pins $3. The last 3 items mentioned all benefit the Youth Scholarship Program. Cathy thanked Mike and Kay Stauffer for finding and bringing the Bee pins. Also after purchasing a Calendar, be sure and mark these dates down:
January 9, 2014, Great Plains Growers Conference, St. Jo Advanced Beekeeping/Organic Solutions with Ross Conrad.
Feb. 7-9, 2014, Kansas City Lawn and Garden Show. We have been invited to provide an Educational Beekeeping booth under the umbrella of the Mo State Beekeepers.
March 8, 2014, 19th Annual Beginning Beekeeping Workshop, Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center, Blue Springs, Mo. **New beekeepers with paid registration for our workshop will also receive complementary Mo State Beekeeper’s Membership(Next Mo State Conference is March 21-22).
Cathy encouraged members to check the Beeline for more dates. Anyone returning any books today may give them to Cindy Connell or myself and we will get them to Tom. Now I’ll have Phill introduce our Speakers and their programs for this meeting.
Our first speaker was Jesse Stauffer, son of Mike and Kay Stauffer, who presented a power point on his Peace Corps experience with beekeepers in Paraguay including his experience working with Africanized bees.
The 2nd speaker was Stuart Dietz, who presented a power point program about his years as a commercial beekeeper titled, Overgrown Hobby of 350 Hives.
Both speakers entertained questions at the end of their presentation. Phill and Cathy thanked both Jesse and Stuart for unique and informative topics. Thank you Phill.
Cathy asked everybody if they had signed the register and had their doorprize ticket. She also told an interesting story about why signing the book is important aside from the doorprizes. She thanked all the doorprize suppliers and all the help for preparing and returning the room to order.
